The Wallabies have performed extremely well when considering the personnel that they have been able to select - especially in the tight five, where they have really struggled. At least Deans has picked some younger players and developed them into 'world class players'. The challenge now of course is to develop some world class tight forwards.

It is interesting that some people have already written the obituary of Robbie Deans.... if he doesn't win this and win that.... well then he is gone. It is probably better for Australian rugby in the meantime to leave Robbie where he is and let Ewen McKenzie develop a really strong legacy at the Reds.... a legacy that will still be challenging to build.... But by turning the Reds into the Australian version of the Crusaders or Bulls will be a real legacy for the whole of Australian Rugby.

Well, yes, 2011 was a mixed year for the Wallabies.

But, in defence of melkdave, they did win the Tri-Nations and come third in the World Cup. They hadn't won the Tri-Nations in eight years, and at the previous World Cup they got knocked out in the quarters.

You can view the awards cabinet as half full or half empty, but some of your interpretations (""struggled to put away a very average SA so-called 1st team in RWC QF"") are straining a bit hard.

Under Deans, Australia remain a fairly scary prospect for anyone.

@isthatrightref agree with much of what you say but believe Deans is safe until possum head, as you dub him, retires as CEO . If he were sacked before the resignation,it would be tantamount to O'Neill saying he was wrong. We all know the fires of Hell would freeze over before the little man would ever admit that. However once he has gone watch the daggers plunge.

All you say might be true ,but it was still the wallabies best season for about a decade. After all you can only beat the sides you face ,and its not RDs fault if SA and NZ kept players back in the 3Ns.This year will most probably give a better indication of just where Australia are .Everyone said at the time for the wallabies fans not to get to over confidant but of course they did along with the media .Still 3rd at the RWC is a good result by anyones standard .Its just the fans and media thought they where the greatest thing since sliced bread and thus where disappointed when they didnt win Bill .Most posters and pundits felt 2015 would be the year Australia could really be RWC winners .Now im not to sure if thats still the case .Going to be an interesting year ive no dought for Australian rugby

@ melkdave... best year for ages? Lost to Samoa, following which Deans (& Cooper) got crucified by the Sydney media; won the 3N while NZ & SA kept key players under wraps for the RWC; lost to Ireland, Deans crucified again; struggled to put away a very average SA so-called 1st team in RWC QF; smashed in SF, media response even more damning than after Samoa & Ireland put together; then beat Wales a couple of times... an AB coach with that kind of record would be lucky to keep his job.

Said it before on other threads but it seems pretty clear that if Deans is to stay on past the Lions tour he'll need to beat Wales, win the Bledisloe and/or 4N, and of course beat the Lions. Anything short of that & he's gone - a really bad 2012 & he may even get fired when possum head vacates the CEO chair but that will also come down to whether ARU can afford to pay him out on the last year of his contract.

One of the basic rules of aussie sport is that when things go bad it's good to have a non-aussie around for sacrificial purposes!

To be honest i feel McKenzie isnt in any talks to replace RD .I also dont see RD being replaced in 2013 unless he decides to go himself ,after all Australia had their best year for ages in 2011 and may have another good year this year

It's definitely on. There's another story in the press that the ARU is no longer issuing long term contracts. That has McKenzie all over it. He doesn't want to be hamstrung by budget restrictions because of underperforming, overpaid showboaters.

Methinks thou dost protest too much. We all know the long knives are out and ready to plunge.

If he's not in talks, he should be. Deans is absolute tripe.
